Click here to view all obituariesI would just like to share these memories of my father-in-law Doug Young. On our wedding day, he said that he was getting a son when I married Elizabeth. I can honestly say that, this is how he treated me from then on. As soon as we got together he would not stop talking about this or that and Elizabeth and her Mom would sometimes have to remind him that we had things to do and could not talk all the time. Elizabeth has also mentioned to me just recently how it was funny that Doug would tell me things about what was going on about his cancer or other things but would not tell her even though she called him almost every day.
We have gone on numerous trips together and had some crazy times. Elizabeth and Heather and the family finally dragged them to Mexico in 2016 and he could not get over how good of a time he was having. I am sure anyone who talked to him with 6 months of him coming back heard all about it.
I believe the best trip I had with him is when I told him I was thinking of going to the grey cup in Winnipeg in November 2015. Of course, going across the country in November in a car is probably not the brightest thing to do but all he said is “Yup we are in”. I am a crazy CFL fan and I have told him my stories form other Grey cup’s and have taken him to a few as well but this one I think blew his mind. I had him doing 3 days of activities related to the CFL and was constantly pointing out CFL players to him. The look of wonder in his eyes was just like a child’s on Christmas morning and will not be forgotten.
I would just like to also say what a great Grandfather he has been to my kids which he as nicknamed slim and blue bird. I will admit I was jealous of him since anytime they found out he was coming they got so excited and could not wait to see him. When Grandpa North was around it was like nobody else mattered to them and it was always Grandpa read me a story, Grandpa can you help me with this, grandpa grandpa grandpa. They would also go to the “farm” with grandpa north and he would take them 4 wheeling and they would have a great time with him going up and down the driveway. Anytime Nicholas was with Grandpa North he followed him around like a shadow and took in everything he said about what ever they were doing at the time. (I know since I heard about it for weeks after words). I had to tell my kids about the passing of their Grandpa north and I swear that they lost some of that twinkle in their eyes since their Grandpa North is no longer with them.
He was a great man to me and my family and he will be missed but never forgotten
