Obituary

It is with deep sorrow and love that we mourn the passing of Giovanni Vito Masotti (also known as, Johnny the Good Looking!).
Survived by his beloved wife Marisa, sister Concetta, daughter Diana (Frank) and son Stephen (Lisa). He was adored and loved dearly by his grandchildren, Marco (Marie Anne), Lucas (Katrina), Marina, and Jordan, and great grandchildren Adriana, Matteo, and Cristian. He will be missed by many nieces, nephews, and godchildren, and lovingly joining his brothers Francesco, Antonio, Luigi, Vito, and all those that have passed before him.
Giovanni was born in San Vito al Tagliamento, Italy where he met the love of his life, Marisa in 1956. They married and immigrated to Sudbury and began the journey of their lives. Hardworking and passionate, Giovanni contributed in constructing a hospital as well as building residential homes in Trout Lake, Hudson Bay, for the indigenous population. During his retiring years, he focused his energy on creating his biggest accomplishment- the designing and building of “The Fountain of Life”, located at “The Grotto” in Greater Sudbury, Ontario. His inspiration came from envisioning people of all ages coming together to enjoy the beauty of life.
Giovanni always had a smile on his face and a joke on his lips. He enjoyed the simplest and purest things in life- family, good friends, the beauty of nature, great music and a fine glass of wine. He was known for his quick wit, infectious smile, vibrant laughter, kind and compassionate spirit. Giovanni was full of life and truly brightened the lives of those around him. He welcomed anyone into his home with love and open arms. Forever young he was, and forever young he will live through those that will always love him.

I love to visit The Grotto, and always marvel, there, at the generosity of Giovanni, for the creation of the beautiful "Fountain of Life". It is one of Sudbury's treasures that he brought to us and has become one of his legacies to our community. God bless all the Family as you celebrate his life.

Zio Johnny was remarkable.

I was lucky to spend a lot of time with him from the age of 10 to 15 as his assistant on numerous projects around Maki Avenue and the South End. He patiently and gracefully taught me carpentry, how to build scaffolding, how to reverse the blade on a skilsaw when cutting steel siding (man, does it howl!), and many other practical lessons – all while joking, singing, whistling, and enjoying every minute.

And there are so many memories from Maki to San Vito over the years.

But there is a memory that sticks out amongst them all. One day I stopped by the grotto to see how Zio’s fontana was coming along and to my surprise there was a concrete truck and small gang of men. Twelve feet in the air I saw the snow-white puff of Zio’s hair (always the foreman) with his arms patiently guiding volunteers, no doubt some who never had seen or smelled concrete being poured before. There he was, atop the formwork for the entablature of the colonnade that wrapped around the eastern side of the Fountain of Life calling the men to come up there with him and bring the tools: rakes, shovels, and concrete vibrators.

Having poured plenty of concrete over the years, including with him at the age of 12, I jumped into the mix. When I got up top Zio just looked at me, beamed his classic smile and said: “Perfect timing my boy!” It was a big pour for the small crew but Zio’s fire kept us going and afterwards, it was his homemade wine. He looked around the group with such pride, profusely thanking all the volunteers who were mostly over 50 and looking spent after helping to achieve this important milestone of his life’s work and creative masterpiece. When his eyes met mine, he gave a little nod and extra wide smile and I knew he was so proud of me, one of his many students over the years, and his great-nephew.

But the best lesson of all from my Zio Johnny is that when creativity and hard work go hand in hand any dream can come to life.
