In Loving Memory of Eleanor “Irene” Ballance (nee Gilligan), who passed away on Friday, October 9th, 2020 at Extendicare York, Sudbury at the age of 102. Beloved wife of Wilmot “Bill” Ballance (predeceased 1971). Loving mother of Marie Bidal (Albert), Larry (Dorothy)(both predeceased), Carol Smith (Edward predeceased), Nancy MacDonald (Richard predeceased), Donald (Denise), Lynne Kirkwood predeceased (Fraser), and Keith (Susan). Dear sister of Betty Saul (Earl predeceased) and a special aunt to Kathy Collard (Tom) and son Matthew. Cherished granny of many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren.

After moving to Sudbury in 1940, she volunteered with the Home and School Association and the Red Cross, helping new Canadians get settled, all the while raising seven children with her husband. Irene was the organist at All People’s United Church for 32 years. For many years, she held several positions as a delegate with Sudbury Presbytery. In 2007, at the age of 90, she was honoured with a Life Membership from the Hospital Auxiliaries Association of Ontario for giving the gift of time, as she had volunteered at the Memorial Hospital for 60 years in various capacities. She enjoyed knitting, sewing, and baking, and was especially proud of her family. The family would like to thank Dr. A. Kuchtaruk along with the staff at Extendicare York for their personal care and attention.

Donations to the All People’s United Church Memorial Fund would be appreciated. Funeral Service in the R. J. I worked with Irene many times over many years as active members of Sudbury Memorial Hospital Auxiliary and volunteers at the hospital. I always enjoyed her company, her sense of humour and her wit. I know she will be missed.

Goodbye Irene, Sympathies to the family of our long time neighbour. We will always have fond memories of the family we grew up with. Your mother was tireless in her church, and her volunteer work. She was am example to us all. Both my husband and I
lived across the street from her in our youth. Jean and Peter Kozelko.

To the Ballance Family, so sorry to hear of your Mom’s passing. Many good memories of growing up on Tedman. The Ballance house was always a place to go. She was always happy and full of laughter. I remember daily talks over the fence between Rose, Lucy and Irene, they were all such good friends. She raised a wonderful family and our thoughts and prayers are with you.
