Obituary for Mary Somers (Babiuk)
In loving memory of Mary (Maria) Somers who passed away at Health Sciences North on April 15, 2023, at the age of 102.
Mary was the beloved wife of James “Red” Somers predeceased. They enjoyed 68 years of marriage.
Mary was the daughter of Nick and Pearl (Bunka) Babiuk both predeceased. Mary was born in Ukraina, Manitoba in 1920. She was predeceased by siblings Anne, Nellie, Metro, Peter, Melina, Bill, and Mike. She is survived by one sister, Rose, in Abbotsford, BC.
Mary met Jim in Winnipeg when he was stationed there during the war. They were married in Winnipeg and after the war they settled in Sudbury and raised 3 children - Violet Wickenden (Gord predeceased), Sharon Somers, and Jim Somers Jr. (Marilyn). They were blessed with 6 grandchildren - Tracey (Dave), David (Tina), Kristy (Michael), Christopher (Melissa), Janet (Dan), and Matthew (Erin). They had 11 great-grandchildren.
Mary was an excellent homemaker. She was a great cook and baker. She was well-known for her cinnamon buns, cabbage rolls, and perogies. She was a gifted seamstress, smocker, and knitter.
Both Mary and Jim loved the Lord and served Him in Sudbury. They were charter members of Lansing Avenue Baptist Chapel and were involved in a variety of ministries there.
Funeral service in the Lansing Avenue Baptist Church, 1192 Lansing Avenue, Sudbury on Wednesday, April 19th, 2023 at 11:30AM followed by a luncheon downstairs at the church. (Friends may call at the church after 10:30AM Wednesday)
The interment at the Civic Cemetery. In lieu of flowers donations to the Lansing Avenue Baptist Chapel or the Infant Food Bank would be appreciated.
