Obituary for Elisabetta Messina (Argiro)
In loving memory of Elisabetta “Elisa” (nee Argiro) Messina.
It is with heavy hearts that our family announces the peaceful passing of our mother, mother-in-law, nonna and bisnonna on Monday, April 10, 2023 at Health Sciences North.
Elisa was the beloved wife of Nicola Messina (predeceased 2003) who she cared for during his illnesses, and after his death, she continued to live independently in the home they built together. She often reminisced of their years together, always reminding her children and grandchildren how much he cared for them. She was the cherished mother of Mario (Jeanne, predeceased), Joe (Liz) and Teresa (Daniele Sindori). She was the loving nonna of Sarah (Yanik Mayer), Melanie Messina (Mathieu Pelletier), Kelsey (Shawn Lavallee), Stephanie Sindori (Mike Pagnutti) and Damian Sindori; as well as bisnonna of Liam and Zoey Lavallee.
Elisa was most happy when cooking for her family and always had a selection of her specialty desserts on hand for after dinner treats. She enjoyed spending time with her family and displayed photos of her loved ones and their accomplishments throughout her home. In her younger years she was an avid gardener, sharing her crops with family and friends. She was meticulous-always ensuring that her home was spotless, her cookies were equal in size, her plants were pruned perfectly and that everything was just right. In recent years, she warmed up to her granddaughters’ pets, enjoying their visits and ensuring they left as full as all the other visitors.
Dear daughter of Guiseppe and Elena Argiro, predeceased and born in Riace, Calabria, Italy, Elisa immigrated to Canada in 1957. She left behind many of her sisters and brother to start a new life in Canada. Dear sister of Angelina Franco (predeceased) (Pietro, predeceased), Maria Simone (Nicola, predeceased), Nicolina Simone (Dante predeceased), Cosimo Argiro (Maria), Rosa Bellissimo (Nicola), Liliana Coniglio predeceased (Domenico), Pina Musuruca (Cosimo). Caring sister-in-law of Giuseppina (Giuseppe Zanino) both predeceased, Adolfo (predeceased) Giuseppina, Guido (Rena) both predeceased, and Clara Papaleo (Antonio) both predeceased. Sadly missed by many nieces and nephews in Canada, Italy and Australia. Elisa had many close friends that she spoke to often and who she cared for deeply.
Our family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the community care team who has been working with us throughout the last few years and Dr. Sutherland for your ongoing commitment and care.

Funeral Mass in St. Patrick’s Church, 39 Walford Road, Sudbury, Tuesday, April 18, 2023 at 10:30am. Entombment in the Civic Cemetery Mausoleum.
