Obituary for Alice Didur (Karpiak)

Alice Didur (nee Karpiak), aged 99.5, died on March 11, 2023. She is remembered for her smile, the twinkle in her eyes, her wry sense of humour, her strength of will, her independence and confidence.

Alice grew up on a farm near Garland, Manitoba, the daughter of John and Nellie Karpiak, with siblings Anne, Nestor, Jeanne, Emily, and Mary. She married Alex Didur in 1943 and moved to Levack, Ontario where she lived for 75 years. She was active in the Order of the Royal Purple, a creative seamstress, and a talented artist. Alex died in 1986, but she is survived by their four children: Gladys (husband Eddy Kachkowski), David (partner Anne Wakelin), Robert (wife Pamela), and Rose Anne, and loving grandchildren and great-grandchildren to whom she was known as Baba.

Alice spent her final years in the care of kind and considerate staff in the Toronto nursing homes Garden Court and Ivan Franko. The latter, a home for Ukrainian women, was where she died with her sons Robert and David, and granddaughters Debbie and Kimberly, present. “I won’t live to be a hundred”, she would say. We can picture her smiling and saying “See - I told you so!”.

Viewing will be from 11:30 am to 1:30 pm at the Lougheed Funeral Home, 252 Regent Street in Sudbury on Friday, March 24, 2023. Burial will follow at the Maplecrest Cemetery in Dowling at 2:00 pm. A reception will take place from 2:30-5:00 pm at the Royal Canadian Legion, 3 James St. in Onaping.

Donations, in lieu of flowers, in memory of Alice, can be made out to: Sudbury Royal Purple Society, 340 McLeod St, Apt. 316., Sudbury ON P3E 5Y4.
