Obituary for Mary Giacomin (Tosato)

Demaris “Mary” Giacomin (nee Tosato) - 92 years
July 8, 1930 - January 29, 2023

It is with great sorrow that the family announces the passing of Mary Giacomin (nee Tosato) on January 29th, 2023 at the age of 92 years. Daughter of the late Antonio and Luigia Tosato, she was one of seven children. Mary is predeceased by her siblings Teresina, Ontario, Nesca, Walter, Robert, and their respective spouses. Survived by her sister Sister Stephanie Tosato CSJ.

Together, with her late husband, Giglio “Giggs” Giacomin, they created a beautiful life, having five children: Valerie Zuliani (Mauro), Joe Giacomin (Cynthia), Paula Theriault (Dan), and predeceased by Christina Joyal (Denis), and Janis Foligno (Mike). As someone who adored being surrounded by children, Mary soon became “Noni” to Taryn, Ashley, Cara, Kristin, Lisa, Brittny, Nick, Matthew, Marcus, Leah, Lucas, Lindsay, Leah, Alex, Andrew, and Louis. Mary’s infectious personality will be deeply missed by her 15 great grandchildren, and her many nieces and nephews.

Mary was born in Sudbury and spent her childhood exploring Gatchell with her siblings and the neighourhood kids. This is how she met her husband Giggs, and together they loved dancing, skating, bowling and, of course, hockey. Mary was always the life of the party! With her quick wit and genuine interest in others, she made an instant friend of everyone she met. Her friendly, outgoing nature is what led her to a life of community service. Mary worked as a cashier for over 40 years at Dominion and A&P grocery stores, always providing exceptional customer service and ensuring those who frequented the store left with a smile on their faces. When Mary wasn’t working, she would canvas for Cancer, Arthritis, Heart and Stroke and Diabetes, and she was also a member of the Catholic Women’s League. Mary was a dedicated hockey and ringette mom/Noni, she spent many years in arenas cheering on her children and grandchildren. Regardless of whether you played hockey, she still made you feel like she was your number one fan.

Extremely devoted to family, Mary spent her retirement years with her grandchildren, always generous with her wisdom, love, support and abundance of kisses. “The best Noni in the world,” she was always ready for visits with freshly baked lemon squares, a salami sandwich and some witty advice. Many of the world’s problems were solved in her kitchen.

Thanks, Ma/Noni, for the beautiful life you lived and for sharing it with us. You led by example, teaching us to always be ourselves, have fun, to occasionally bend the rules (especially if it will make someone smile), and that kindness and respect will always win in the end. We love you and we will miss you always.

A special thank you for the care and love provided by the staff at the Hillcrest wing at St. Joe’s Villa - you know who you are.
