Obituary for Doug Harbin

Doug Harbin was born May 24th, 1928 in Toronto to Stanley and Susan Harbin, a baby brother to Ernie and Roy. A gifted athlete, Doug played hockey, softball, and football as a teenager and rode his bicycle to Barrie for fun. After a career at General Electric as a draftsman, he drove to Sudbury in 1956 to take a teaching position and met Marion Chalmers whom he asked to marry him on their third date. In a house he built, they raised four children while he taught at Lasalle Secondary School. Jeff and Penny (Scott & Diane), Karen and Mike (Jaime), Greg and Dolores (Darolyn & Mathew) and Laura and Gerard (John, Cory & Julia) enjoyed time spent with him at the family home, cottage and ski chalet. Two great-grandchildren, Audra and Lyla, entertained Doug on many occasions. After thirty years of teaching, he settled into a retirement of tennis, golfing, skiing, travelling and building a new home and cottage. A thriftiness born of being raised during the depression, inspired an annual recycled gift Christmas party, and the nine lives of many objects around the house. A calm, unflappable presence, with a sharp sense of humour, he left an indelible mark on the hearts of his family and friends. He passed on October 3rd , 2022 at the Maison McCulloch Hospice surrounded by family and supported by the amazing staff. Donations in his name will be gladly accepted by the Hospice. The family invites anyone who would like to share a story and celebrate Doug’s life to the family home on Friday October 7th between 11 am and 3 pm. Arrangements entrusted to the Lougheed Funeral Homes.
