Obituary for Maureen Olivia DeStefano (Mattson)

Maureen Olivia DeStefano (née Mattson) passed away peacefully on August 13, 2022, at Maison McCullough Hospice at the age of 77. She was surrounded by her family and close friends during her last days.

She loved to share stories with those around her, passing along her sharp sense of humour, kindness, and resilient spirit to all she met. She’ll be remembered as a loyal and gracious friend and counsellor, a loving family member, and someone who always put others first.

The daughter of a miner, Maureen’s early life was spent moving around Northern Ontario and Quebec. Leaving Manitouwadge at 16, she attended Ryerson University, graduating with a Business and Secretarial degree at the age of 20. Her career as an educator began at Garson Falconbridge High School, and subsequent stops at Cambrian College and Marymount College. She met her husband Richard while at Garson and they were married in 1967. While raising her children, she remained active in her community. Her volunteering continued throughout her life including work with the Catholic Women’s League, assisting elementary students, and being on the founding board of Genevra House.

Maureen is predeceased by her parents, Ollie and Bette Mattson, husband Richard, her daughter Cara Beth Bianca (who passed away shortly after birth) and her sister Joanne.

Maureen leaves behind her sons Joel and Devin (wife Maureen), grandchildren Oliver, Isabel and Finn, her brother Randy Mattson (wife Ewa) and their children Hampus and Toby, as well as brother-in-law Robert and his children Laura and Michael.

She will be missed by her sisters-in-law Kathy and Vickie Destefano and her nephews Derek and Jason (Lynn) along with her close friends Marie Prosperi, Roseanne Lyons, and Judy Courtemanche.

The DeStefano family wants to give special thanks to the Oncology and Palliative Care staff at Health Sciences North, in particular Dr. Ali, Dr. Singh, and Nurse Erin. They also want to recognize the amazing team at Maison McCullough who treated Maureen with respect, love, and perpetual good humour during her stay.

There will also be a celebration of life for Dick and Maureen on Friday June 2, 2023 at the Vale Cavern at Science North at 6pm.
