Obituary for Helen Randmaa (Kulikowski)

HELEN RANDMAA (née Kulikowski), passed away peacefully at Maison McCulloch Hospice in Sudbury on August 11, 2022 at the age of 97.

Born on February 13, 1925, in Coniston, Ontario to her parents Anastasia (Nellie) and Stanley Kulikowski. Predeceased by her siblings Mary and Bill.

As a young girl, Helen and her mother moved to Rouyn-Noranda where she attended school and took on her first job at a women’s clothing store - a career that followed her to Kirkland Lake and became an important part of her life.

Outgoing, friendly, with a great sense of humour, Helen’s company was appreciated by everyone who knew her. Helen loved music and dancing, sewing and knitting, and taking care of the flowers and vegetables she grew in the beautiful garden of her home. She was especially proud of the volunteer work she did for the hospital in North Bay.

Helen’s excellent cooking, rooted in her Ukrainian heritage, brought the family together as they would watch her, and her mother expertly stuff the cabbage rolls and pinch the perogies that would later become the star of many fond holiday memories.

Helen married first to John Matijek (predeceased) in 1945 with whom she had her son Peter (Sharon) Matijek and daughter Sonya Matijek.

A number of years later, she met her second husband Lembit Randmaa (predeceased), who she married in 1957. Their daughter Susan (James) Guscott became their devoted and primary care giver for them both in their senior years.

Helen is also survived by her grandson Michael (Wendy) Matijek, granddaughter Shauna (Dave) Léveillé, grandson Thomas (Veronica) Guscott, great grandson Noah Léveillé, great granddaughters Tristan (Marc) Leclair, Sophie Léveillé, Lily Matijek, and great-great granddaughter, Zoè Leclair, as well as many nieces and nephews, and her care giver and friend Gill Hobson.

Arrangements entrusted to Park Lawn Crematorium.

As per Helen’s wishes there will be no service and internment will be in North Bay at a later date. Donations to the Maison McCulloch Hospice in Helen's memory would be greatly appreciated.
