Obituary for Julian Maluha

Julian Maluha

Passed away peacefully surrounded by family on August 7th, 2022, in his 94th year.

Beloved husband of 52 years to the late Alicia (Holynski) Maluha. Cherished father to Marcy Wereha and the late Orest Maluha. Loved as “Gigi” by his grandchildren Paul Wereha (Michelle Kamler) and Andrika Starr (Vic Tesolin), and “Great Gigi” to Lukas and Felix Kamler Wereha. He will be missed by his brother-in-laws Nick Holynski and Dan Maren (Myrna (Holynski) Maren - predeceased), family in Ukraine, longtime Sudbury friends, the wonderful people at the Sudbury Ukrainian Seniors Centre, and the caring staff at Billings Court Manor.

Julian was born on July 5th, 1928 in Zolochiv, Ukraine. At the young age of 14 he was taken to work in Germany, escaped to Austria, and eventually came to Canada. He arrived in Halifax on September 13th, 1947 and was taken by train to Thunder Bay to work as a lumberjack. From there he went to Sudbury where he worked in several INCO mines for over 36 years.

Throughout his life he was an active member of the Dnipro Choir and the Sudbury Branches of the Ukraine National Federation and the Ukrainian National Youth Federation, where he held several executive positions. In his retirement he enjoyed spending time at Richard Lake, gardening, blueberry, and mushroom picking, playing pool at the local YMCA, going for walks at Bell Park, and delivering Avon orders for his wife’s customers.

Julian will forever be remembered for his strong work ethic, tough yet devoted love, stubborn determination, kindness, ability to carry a conversation in six languages, and for making people laugh by being quick with a joke.
