Obituary for Mildred Simon (Dunlop)

In loving memory of Mildred Eileen Simon (nee Dunlop), 97 years old, passed away at Pioneer Manor on Wednesday, April 27th, 2022. Mildred was born on July 20, 1924 in Chatham, Ontario to parents Cyril and Sarah Dunlop (nee Mills) both predeceased. She was the eldest surviving of four children, Ruth Vidler (John), Harold and Cecil (Eileen). Beloved wife of Arthur Simon predeceased June 1983. Survived by her children Christine Benninger (Mike McGuire) of Chatham, Robert (Marion), Matthew and Kathryn Bouillon (Gilles) all of Sudbury. She will be fondly remembered by her 7 grandchildren, Tracy Callaghan (Jim), Jason Benninger, Eli Simon, Krista Gilpin (Scott), Caitlin Simon (Dave McLaughlin), Aaron Simon, and Brieanne Bouillon, 7 great-grandchildren and 2 (soon-to-be 3) great-great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.

Mom was a proud WWII Veteran, enlisting at the age of 18 on November 6th, 1942 and serving until September 21st, 1945. She was stationed at the military headquarters in Quebec City and later moved to Sudbury to raise her family. With two young children at home, Mom later enlisted in the 33rd R.C.E.M.E. Reserves in Sudbury and served from January 5th, 1952 thru January 23rd, 1956.

Mom always enjoyed being surrounded by children at the playground, as a Sunday School teacher and as a leader in both Boy Scouts (aka Wise Owl) and Beavers (aka Rainbow) in Garson. Mom was inspired to be a Lay Speaker for Nickel City Districts United Church and enjoyed singing in the choir. As many of her neighbours, friends and family will know, Mom was famous for her fresh-out-of-the-oven Peanut Butter Cookies.

The family wishes to thank the nurses and PSW’s at Pioneer Manor for their compassionate care for Mom. Thank you also to the staff and PSW’s at Westmount Retirement, Mom’s home for 8 years.
