Obituary for Stephanie "Stella" Marie Yuriy (Wawryszyn)

In loving memory of Stephanie (Stella) Yuriy, who passed away peacefully at the age of 80 years on Tuesday April 5, 2022.
Stella was born on July 26, 1941 in Sudbury, Ontario. Beloved wife of 57 years to Matt Yuriy, proud and loving mother to her sons Marc and Greg (Andrea predeceased). Cherished daughter of Michael and Barbara Wawryszyn (both predeceased). Sister of Olga Yallowega, Sophie Mustaler and Walter Wawryszyn (all predeceased). Remembered affectionately by many nieces, nephews, and close friends.
Stella grew up in Levack, Ontario and was star bowler and badminton player. In her early years she worked as a clerk for the town of Levack before moving with her husband to Thompson, Manitoba, where she worked in payroll for Inco. In 1968, her and Matt moved back to Ontario and Stella took a job at Falconbridge Limited in Onaping. In 1971 she left the workforce to devote herself full time to her two children.
Stella always put the needs of others ahead of her own. She continued to be a strong advocate for persons with intellectual disabilities serving as a board member for Community Living Greater Sudbury for 14 years. Stella maintained an active role in the lives of those she touched. Her secret butter tarts and other pastries were legendary with the residents and staff of the group homes. She always looked forward to participating in St. Mary’s Church food workshops. She was an excellent cook, a master of many Ukrainian dishes, and enjoyed knitting slippers for those she cared about.
Resting at the Jackson and Barnard Funeral Home, 233 Larch St., Sudbury. Visitation on Sunday April 10, 2022 from 2-4 and 6-8 pm with a Panakayda service at 7 pm. Funeral Mass on Monday April 11, 2022 at St. Mary’s Ukrainian Catholic Church at 10:30 am with interment at Civic Memorial Cemetery.
