Obituary for Anne Zacerkowny (Holunga)

In loving memory of Anne Zacerkowny, 93 years, who passed away peacefully, surrounded by family on Saturday morning July 24th, 2021 at the St. Joseph’s Continuing Care Centre, Sudbury. Born April 4th, 1928 in Coniston, Ontario, she was the beloved daughter of Wasyl and Olena Holunga both predeceased. “Big” sister to Michael, Alex predeceased (Elsie predeceased) and Nicholas predeceased, John (Florence), Mary (Phil Shiplack predeceased),) and Stella (Gerry Turcotte predeceased). Known as “Auntie Annie” to their children.

Travelling for work at a young age, Anne developed lifelong friendships with people throughout North America. In 1952 she met and married the Love of her life, Wolodymyr “Walter” Zacerkowny, who passed away in 2002. Together they wove the fabric of the Ukrainian and Canadian cultures into their family and daily lives. Annie worked in many places including the Ukrainian Co-op, but her passion was being a Wife, Mother, Grandmother and Great Grandmother. A tireless worker she constantly cooked and baked for her family and others such as the Ukrainian National Federation. Preparing the bounty produced from her husband’s garden and her brother Mike’s foraging was always displayed on her kitchen table with jars of fruit, mushrooms, pickles, pies and vegetables that were to be frozen.

Holidays could not go by without weeks of preparation, 10 different pastries and 10 meal courses. Easter baskets were always proudly displayed at the St. Mary’s Church for blessing. A simple 5 minute visit or a pick-up of one of the children would not go without snacks prepared by Anne, and Walter offering you a drink - almost always you were talked into a full meal.

Mama’s light and legacy will continue to shine brightly in our hearts. Devoted wife for 50 years to Wolodymyr Walter Zacerkowny, of Sudbury. Beloved mother of Steve wife Lydia of Sudbury, Lesia of Sudbury and Orest wife Shelley of Windsor. Dear mother in law of Jocelyn predeceased. Proud grandmother of Talia, Travis, Michael, Andrew, Annah, Jordan, Alison, Zennon, and Wolfgang. Even prouder great grandmother of Aiden, Alex, Josie, Willa, and Oscar.
