Obituary

It is with heavy hearts and deep sorrow that we announce the passing of our beloved mother and grandmother, Shirley, in her 89th year in the early morning hours of June 7, 2021 at Health Sciences North, Sudbury, On in the presence of her family. Shirley was predeceased by the love of her life, Kauko Albert (Al) Jussila on May 16, 2018, her loving parents, Carl A. Hedman in 1984 and Ellen M.(Jacobson) Hedman in 1964, her in-laws Antti Jussila (1945), Martta (Linna) Jussila Hopiavuori (1990] and Mauno Hopiavuori (1971) as well as all of her Aunts, Uncles and cousins that meant so much to her. Survived by her loving and devoted children, Robert (Lynn), Ronald (Glenn), Nancy and her cherished grandchildren, Erik and Carly. She is also survived by her son James. Mom was born in 1933 in Kirkland Lake On. She had a happy and idyllic childhood, attended Central Public School and graduated from KLCVI in 1950.
After a few brief stints working in Southern Ontario, mom returned home to KL and, having met our Dad, the love of her life, they got married at Trinity United Church on November 20, 1954. They began their married life in KL but in 1955 they moved to the Sudbury area where they began their family. In 1968, mom and dad began construction on our family cottage at Onaping Lake On where for the next 30 years were created some of the most cherished and happy family memories. Upon Dads retirement in 1991, our parents began spending their winters down south, eventually settling on Panama City Beach, Fl where they became part of a special group of friends with whom they enjoyed many, many happy dinners and social events together, golfing, beach walking and shopping, over the course of 25 winters. In the early 90’s Mom was the founding member of a special group of ladies who became known as the Kirkland Lake Golden Girls. They were a group of 7 women who all grew up together that reconnected with each other and for the next 20 plus years, organized annual get-togethers at various locations throughout Ontario. Mom enjoyed the outdoors, fishing at Onaping Lake and later, Salmon fishing at Manitoulin Island, long walks, biking, cooking, and baking. However, spending time with her family and friends was her top priority. In her later years, to our surprise, she became a Tampa Bay Lightning Superfan. She loved watching all their games and attended several games in Tampa Fl. where she was thrilled to meet her favourite player, Victor Hedman with whom she shared a last name.
As a final note, we would like to share that even though Mom left her hometown at a very young age, Kirkland Lake remained a special place in her heart for the rest of her life and we are honouring her final wishes to be returned home to Kirkland Lake for interment at the KIrkland Lake cemetery. The family would like to thank all of the wonderful people who helped our Mom over the past couple of years as she struggled to deal with the challenges of declining health, including the Bayshore Nursing team and the fantastic staff at HSN, whose exceptional care, kindness and compassion shown to our mom will never be forgotten. And a special thank you to Dr. T. Mirka who provided our mother with excellent care and attention over the past 10 + years. In lieu of flowers, donations in Mom’s memory to the Canadian Liver Foundation (liver.ca) would be appreciated, or a charity of your choice. Arrangements entrusted to the Lougheed Funeral Home.
