Hazel was born in Richmond, Ontario on November 13th, 1922 to William and Bertha Boyle (nee Graham) both predeceased. She married her beloved husband James Henry “Harry” Matthews in Ottawa on March 2ND, 1946 and moved to Capreol. She will be sadly missed by her family Charlie “Butch” and Janice Skinner & family, John and Kathy Armstrong & family, Laurie Kyryluk predeceased and son Scott, and Verna Matthews Barstead & family as well as her dear friends Bruna Nordman & family, Sharon Shane & family, Kelly Graham & children, Kim McGee and children, Sister Dianne, Noella Allaire, Sue Armstrong, Carmen & Don Lemeieux, Stella and Andy Boudreau, Don and Shirley Degagne, Harold and Marg Johnson both predeceased & family, Julie Monaghan and her life long friend Elsa Lessard of Ottawa.

In her younger years, Hazel worked briefly at Statistics Canada. Hazel loved the color purple, going to the slots with Bruna and Julie and going to the Mother House Chapel in North Bay with Sister Dianne. She and Harry made many happy memories at their camp on Lake Wahnapitae. She had a great sense of humor and has left us with many memories we will cherish.

The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to Sister Dianne, Lise St. Jacques and Amanda Rainville NP, as well as the staff, nurses and doctors at Health Sciences North 4th floor North Tower, and to all the PSW’s for their care and compassion.

Cremation at the Park Lawn Crematorium. A memorial service will be held at the Jackson & Barnard Funeral Home when the social gathering restrictions ease. Hazel will be buried alongside her husband in the Beechwood Cemetery in Ottawa or in keeping with her great sense of humor, as Hazel would say she is “In the process of moving to her new apartment in Ottawa.” Donations to the Maison McCulloch Hospice would be appreciated. Dear Hazel....what a wonderful lady! Always so pleasant and fun. When our family was young, and we were visiting Capreol, a highlight would always be taking Hazel to Dairy Queen for her vanilla cone. Hazel had such a kind and genuine presence that made you simply want to be in the same room as her. We loved that she loved to watch "her football games". We loved to see her teeny, tiny handwriting that was beautifully written. Decades ago we named our Christmas tree topper "Hazel". It's an impish looking angel that we cherish and it makes us smile and remember Hazel's sweet ways. Hazel, an angel on earth and now an angel in heaven. Fondly remembered by Cathy & Marty Sweezey and Bradley, Jeffrey & Jennifer.

Hazel's card was always full. She was quick to say yes for any car outing. Lunch and shopping were a treat for Hazel.
On special occasion dinners, you knew you had to ask Hazel well in advance. Once she was with you, she was often the center of all activity. She was very interested in all our lives and relished our updates.
What a lady, always made you feel special❤️
So many people you've left behind Hazel, we'll have wonderful stories to share with our families for years to come❤️
Miss you so much❤️

What a beautiful, wonderful, humorous Lady we have lost. When we lived in Capreol we loved her company and my son just took a shine to Harry..........He'd go knock on their door and ask Hazel if Harry could come out to play!!! Hazel and I shared a love for the colour purple and used to laugh when we'd both show up somewhere wearing purple clothes. Hope all your treasured memories will keep dear Hazel alive in your hearts forever. She will certainly be missed. Bless you all as you go through these difficult time.

Hazel had the gentlest spirit, of anyone I ever knew. Her smile and her sharp wit was always appreciated when family gathered. She was a positive light to every one who’s life she touched. I will miss and honour her legacy of kindness and tolerance. Rest in peace Hazel. You are greatly loved.
