Josephine (nee Dziubaniuk) Desjardins “Josie”
September 27, 1932 to April 17, 2021
Beloved wife of Maurice Desjardins (predeceased 2010). Loving mother of Diane Frederick (Kelly), Kim Currey (Lewis), Rick Desjardins (predeceased 1994) (Linda), Patty, Maury and Bernie. Cherished grandmother of Jordon Currey (Shawna), Shawna Woolley (Chris), Neva Frederick Ethier, Kendra Frederick (Jared), Trina Desjardins (Justin), Chelsea Currey (Jeff), Andrew Desjardins (Mandy), Quin Desjardins (Stephanie), Veronica Desjardins, Ryan Desjardins (Chantale), Sabrina Desjardins (Matt), Jenna Arthur (Solomon) and Dexter Desjardins. Dear great grandmother to 21 great grandchildren. Darling sister to Helen Tarkin, James Dziubaniuk, Juley Dixon (all predeceased). Sadly missed by sister in law Lilli Dziubaniuk and many nieces and nephews. Born in Sudbury to Ukrainian parents, Sabina and Stanley Dziubaniuk, Josie grew up in “The Donovan” and later shared many stories about her upbringing in the Eastern European neighborhood. She was lucky to have two soulmates in her life--her twin sister, Juley and then Maurice, her beloved husband of 58 years. Josie and Maurice married in 1952. In 1960 they moved to Thompson, MB with their four small children where they completed their family with their youngest two. During their 14 years in Thompson, they were very involved in the community, taking part in the Kinsmen and Kinette Club, badminton, golf, curling, and all of their children's activities. They loved their time spent camping and fishing at Paint Lake with their family. They formed many lifelong friendships while living there. When they returned to Sudbury, Josie and Maurice owned and operated many successful businesses: Walden General Store in Naughton, the Alder Hall, and the Townehouse Tavern. Josie loved to travel, spending many winters at their condo in Florida, enjoyed numerous cruises, and often road tripped across Canada and USA, but always enjoyed coming home to the camp she and Maurice built on Wabagishik Lake. With Josie’s vision and Maurice’s carpentry, the ever-evolving camp is a place the entire family has enjoyed for more than 30 years. Josie was incredibly proud of her family’s accomplishments and loved to brag about them to anyone who would listen. A true matriarch, Josie devoted her life to her family. She was happiest when she was surrounded by a big group of people and her dogs, watching sports or Judge Judy on tv. She was a gifted cook and loved to feed a crowd--from her catering days to continuous family celebrations. She made the best cabbage rolls, pedaheh and pies. Her grandchildren remember her for her flea market, Target, and yard sale treasures and for loving a firm head and back scratch. Josie was a strong and resilient woman who loved to laugh and entertain. Her spirited nature is her legacy and it lives on through the enormous family she brought into this world. At Josie’s request, there will be no funeral visitation or service. A celebration of life will be held at a later date. Cremation.
