Obituary

It is with great sadness that the family of Catherine B. Bonnis (nee Crooker) announces her passing on Sunday, February 28, 2021, at the age of 75 years. Catherine will be dearly missed by her loving husband of 54 years, Allen, her children Brittainy (Michael) and Brendan (Leigh) and her grandchildren Corbin and Rykin. Catherine will be lovingly remembered by her sister Barbara (David) and brothers Darryl (Irma) and Brad (Wendy) and by her nieces, cousins, and many friends.

In different times we would have gathered in her honour with her church family. Hers was a faith that was bound to duty. It required of her a lifetime commitment to do and to be better in the service of others. At St. Stephen’s on the Hill she found a faith community that challenged and inspired her as well as many lifelong friendships.

Catherine was deeply engaged with the world, she read widely, travelled and was prone to talking to strangers – particularly ones with babies. Catherine was intrigued by what she didn’t know, hadn’t seen, and in understanding new things. She was determined to find connection in commonalities, provide care in compassion and to foster inclusion for all, and she expected no less from those around her. Knowing her made us all more thoughtful, smarter and kinder. She met life with enthusiasm and joy. She was funny and quick-witted and her laughter lit up our lives. That she was a terrible singer never deterred her from ‘making a joyful noise’. Catherine counted amongst her many blessings her family and her friends but especially her grandchildren who she loved without limits and for whom she had great hopes and felt much pride.

Catherine was, above all else, faithful in her love, in her commitment, and in her service. To be loved by her was to be shaped by the steadfastness of that love and for that we are forever grateful. The world is a better place for her having been in it – in her memory we will continue to carry her love and her light into the world.

We will gather in her memory when we can do so safely. If you wish to make a donation in her memory the Sudbury Infant Food Bank and St. Stephen’s on the Hill were closest to her heart.

One of my fond memories of Catherine is similar to Rykin’s. I was about 8 years old when we all still lived in Sarnia. Catharine and her girlfriend took me on a camping trip in a VW beetle . We traveled across Ontario and Catherine took me to see things like the Brock monument. Cherish your time with the new generation and like Catharine ,show them your love of travel and learning.
Goodbye Sister May God bless your kind soul.

Catherine was my grandma and I really enjoyed spending time with her. She enjoyed taking me to new places and getting me to try new things. One of my favourite memories with her was our trip to Quebec and I wish could experience it again. She was one of the nicest people I've met and I'm very glad she was my grandmother. I miss her a lot.

Catherine was more than just a mother in law to me. She was my friend. We cried together, laughed together and could chat like there was no end to the day. One of the qualities that drew me to Brendan was his dedication and loyalty to those he loves and after meeting Catherine I knew it was a family trait passed on by her. Our family will miss her deeply.

I was saddened to hear the news of Catherine’s passing. I have many fond memories of her from my time serving St. Stephen’s on the Hill. I especially miss the wonderful dishes she would bring to the senior’s potlucks. I hold you all in my prayers.
