Obituary for H. Richard Toivonen
In loving memory of H. Richard Toivonen, Wednesday, March 3, 2021, peacefully at St. Joseph’s Villa, Sudbury, ON, in his 82nd year. Richard was the son of the late Harry and Sarah Toivonen. Loving and devoted husband to his bride, Helen Angelina Toivonen (Berta), predeceased. Proud father of Ilona Toivonen (Patrick), and Dianne Buskard (Tyler). Cherished grandfather of David, Taryn, Easton, and Chrisanne. Dear brother of Diane Wadel (Ken) and uncle to Cindy Newman (George).
Richard will be remembered for his quest to master his passions, often receiving awards and accolades for his efforts. He was an accomplished educator, musician, gardener, winemaker, photographer, and master finishing carpenter. His trademark infectious smile perfectly matched his hearty laughter and quick-witted sense of humour. As a life-long resident of Sudbury and a high school teacher, Richard was well-known in the community. A natural leader, there was never a time in Richard‘s life when he wasn’t involved in a production or performance, project or pastime. Rarely one to be behind the scenes, Richard was often running the show. Despite these accomplishments, Richard’s self-professed proudest accomplishment in life was his family. He took no greater pleasure than to bring family and particularly his grandchildren on adventures around the world.
Memorial donations may be made toward The Richard and Helen Toivonen Memorial Bursary Fund. A celebration of life will be held when we can gather safely. Always known as a generous man, Richard has chosen to share his final resting place with his parents Harry and Sarah, at Parklawn Cemetery in Sudbury, and with his wife Helen at Riverview Cemetery in Wallaceburg.
