Obituary for Ellen Helena Asunmaa (Kiiskinen)

In loving memory of Ellen Helena Asunmaa (Kiiskinen), 88 years. It is with great sadness that the family announces the peaceful passing of their mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, on December 12th, 2020. Born to Kirsti and Paavo Kiiskinen on December 11th, 1932 in Karsamaki, Finland, she immigrated to Canada with her parents in 1950, settling in Sudbury. It was here that she met and married the love of her life, Mikko Asunmaa (predeceased 1992). Ellen is survived by her son Allan (Judy), grandchildren Michael (Lexi), Brittany (Thad), and great grandchildren Owen, Ava, and Aidan.

Ellen worked at Woolworths for 25 years until its closure. She was a faithful member of St. Mathew’s Finnish Lutheran Church. She had a passion for knitting, and would knit toques, mitts, and socks, bringing them to the Salvation Army and Samaritan Centre every Christmas. Some of her favourite times were driving her friends to her camp on Tilton Lake for a sauna and swim, and later on watching her great-grandchildren running the halls of Finlandia. Ellen cherished gatherings with her extended family, particularly special holidays.

In lieu of flowers, donations to Finlandia SISU Foundation or New Hope Lutheran Church would be appreciated. Funeral Service in the R. J. Barnard Chapel, Jackson and Barnard Funeral Home, 233 Larch Street, Sudbury, Thursday, December 17th, 2020 at 11:30am. Interment in the family plot at the Civic Memorial Cemetery.
