Obituary for Annie Clara Evans (Albany)
Our beloved mother, Annie (Doreen) Clara May Albany Evans passed away at the age of 77 on Wednesday, November 11th at Extendicare Falconbridge in Sudbury, Ontario. She has become the newest Angel in the Kingdom of Heaven, joining her Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. Annie was born on April 15th, 1943 in Haileybury, Ontario. She spent much of her youth and adolescence living with her aunt Annie Twain in Mowatt’s Landing, just outside of Haileybury. She worked as a camp cook for forestry workers while raising her young son Peter. It was during this time that she met her partner in love and life, Donald. They lived together in North Cobalt, Ontario for the next quarter of a century. Annie and Donald built a home (literally) and hobby farm on Quarry Road in North Cobalt where the two of them raised their large family. Altogether, Annie and Donald had 14 children during their time there. Although the family struggled at times, Annie made sure the family was always fed with bannock, blueberries, and fresh milk, among other things. Annie made sure the home ran smoothly while Donald worked hard to keep the family sheltered from the cold.
The family moved to Englehart, Ontario in the mid-1980s with six of the children still living at home. Sadly, Annie and Donald separated a few years later. Annie became a single mother caring for the three youngest children, moving between Port Colborne, Haileybury, Earlton, and ultimately back to North Cobalt. Over time and despite their separation, Annie and Donald became good friends again and remained companions for the rest of Donald’s life. We all remember fondly their famous yard sale trips on Saturday mornings together.
When her children had grown and left home, Annie became an extraordinary grandmother, caretaker, and support system for her whole family. She lived in New Liskeard, helping her youngest daughter and her family as a live-in caretaker. She went back to school, completing literacy training in her early 60s. She helped her son get through graduate school by being his supportive roommate and friend for two years in Niagara Falls. Every year, despite her financial situation, she always found a way buy gifts for everyone at Christmas and never forgot anyone’s birthday.
During the final years before dementia came for her, Annie lived a free and independent life in both Niagara Falls and Sudbury where she would frequently be seen riding her bike through the city. She made fast friends with all of those around her, especially at the restaurants and shops she frequented. The staff at the Tim Horton’s in Stamford Centre Niagara Falls and the Country Style on Lorne Street in Sudbury all knew her by name. Even during her time at Extendicare Falconbridge, she made many friends with other residents and members of the staff. Up to her final days, she remembered who all of her children, grandchildren, friends, and extended family were…she didn’t let dementia defeat her.
Loving wife of the late Donald Edward Evans and mother of Peter (Nicki) Albany, Clara (Danny) Alberta, Helen (Dwayne) Mills, Karen (Ed) Huard, Sharon (Tom) Rowland, Dwight (Janice) Evans, Clinton (Joanne) Evans, Scott (Angie) Evans, Hal Evans, Russell (John Sparks) Evans, and Kim (Justin) Charlton. Cherished grandma to Shannon, Melissa, Daniel, Adam, Dylan, Warren, Evan, Kayla, Devan, Kara, Eddie, Kyle, Natasha, Cody, Skylar, Nadine, Alex, BJ, Jordan, Justin, Jarred, Deanna, Owen, Noah, Jacob, Samara, and Kamara. Annie will also be remembered by her many step grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren.
Annie was predeceased by her parents Josephine Agnes Twain and Peter A. Albany, her sisters Jeanette, Rose-Mary, and Mary; brothers Philip, Daniel, John, and William; her children Dennis, Michael, and Jack; and her husband Donald Edward Evans. She is survived by her brother Alex Albany, her eleven remaining children and her many, many grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren.
Mom loved cats, squirrels, and stuffed animals. She loved to stay active through walking, biking, or tidying the house. She could always be found with a newspaper, watching news, doing word finds, or reading her Chicken Soup books. She kept her faith in Jesus strong throughout her life and continued to go to church up until her final months. Every night she prayed for her family, that they would be kept safe and protected.
Mom, you were a great lady but more importantly, you were a wonderful mother and grandma. We will always love you and never forget everything you did for us. Chi miigwech nimaamaa giinawind zaasi giin, giga-waabamin menawaa (Thank you my mother, we love you, we will see you again).
The family would like to thank the exceptional staff at Extendicare Falconbridge who took such good care of our mom over the last 6 years. A closed family visitation will be held at 9:00 am on Saturday, November 14th, followed by a public visitation at 9:30 am and a service at 10:30 am. The funeral will take place at Jackson and Barnard Funeral Home at 233 Larch Street in Sudbury, Ontario. As expressions of sympathy, donations can be made in Annie Evans’ name to the Ontario SPCA and Humane Society, Alzheimer Society of Canada, or Diabetes Canada. Due to COVID -19 directives a maximum of 50 people at a time in the visiting rom and a maximum of 80 people in the chapel. For those who cannot attend, the service will be live streamed at
