Elsie Greuel
Our mom passed away on October 22nd, 2020. Predeceased by her husband Ben (2011). A life well-lived. Born in Ethelbert, Manitoba to Nicholas and Mychalina Domaratzki. Survived by her siblings Ludwig (Sandy), Pat (late Alex), Zygmund (Patsy), Stacia (Edward), Carol (Orest). Predeceased by siblings Mary (John d), Bertha (Peter d), Karl (Helen) and Edward (Charlotte d). Also survived by sisters-in-law Marie Dyer, Bernadette Greuel, Alice Boehm and Florence Steckler. Mom to Jeff (Lenore Ross), Jim (Morna), Catherine (Brock Folkersen), John (Lynda) and Jessica. A doting (but not averse to asking a pointed question) grandmother to Jillian, Kate, Ruth, Adam, Grace, Jeremy, Peter, Alexander, Sal and Simon. After growing up in Ethelbert, teaching in a one-room schoolhouse in Cowan and working in Winnipeg, Elsie set her sights on bigger things. Sudbury! She moved to Sudbury and worked in the INCO business offices in Copper Cliff. It was here she met Ben Greuel who she would marry in 1956. Ben and Elsie shared over 55 years together. With the optimism and hard work that was always a part of their lives, Ben and Elsie bought land and had a house built (with much sweat equity) outside of Naughton. That home was a central and very important place for all of our family for all those growing-up years. At the absolute center of that world of scraped knees, INCO strikes, shift work, school projects, raging teenage hormones, parched wells and frozen winter laundry was our mom. The person who could pull together meals from thin air, laugh at Monty Python, look sophisticated while taking a drag on a du Maurier, help with homework and can 25 jars of tomatoes on a Tuesday night in September. Although summer travel was always a part of our family's life it tended to be road trips back to Manitoba and Saskatchewan. After our dad's retirement Elsie and Ben set their sights on other parts of the world and headed to Cuba, Newfoundland, Australia, a number of European countries and Mexico. More recently mom joined Catherine and Brock on their annual winter vacations in Mexico. Although mom dreaded the plane trips and airports she loved the sun and beaches and afternoon martinis. Elsie was a long time member of the Ladies Guild of St. Christopher’s Church, where she was also a Eucharistic Minister and Reader. A committed walker who loved walking in warm weather but would happily resort to indoor hallways and stairwells in inclement weather. Willing to laugh at herself, but would laugh at others who warranted it. The family would like to thank Dr. Monica Susil and the City of Lakes FHT On-Call team, Dr. Ravi Singh and the fantastic nursing staff at HSN (Special thanks to Alexis, Helen, Robyn, Dalton and Jazmyn). As well the Bayshore PSWs and all the staff at Meadowbrook were exceptionally kind and caring during our mom’s stay there. Cremation has taken place. There will be a private family gathering and interment. There will be a Celebration of Life when we can have those kinds of gatherings again.
