In loving memory of Anna Kowal (Nowicka) who passed away peacefully in her home at the age of 92, Thursday, October 8th, 2020. Born in Khivchany, Lviv Oblast, Ukraine, on January 29th, 1928. During World War II, Anna was forcibly taken by invading Nazis to work as a slave labour in Germany until 1945. Following this conflict, she moved to Paris, France, where she met Eugene Kowal. They married and settled in Coniston. Proud of her Ukrainian heritage, she was a founding member of St. Michael’s Ukrainian Catholic Church. She acted as President of the St. Michael’s Women’s League. She enjoyed sewing, gardening, pickling, cooking perogies, borsch, cabbage rolls and other fine Ukrainian foods. Anna loved birds, both watching and feeding them. She will be remembered as friendly, kind, considerate, meticulous, and devoted to her family. As well, she was attached to and loved her dogs, Cocoa and Patches. Her knowledge of the community life was extensive, and she had many stories to tell. Beloved wife of Eugene (predeceased in 2009). Loving mother of Barbara (Jerry Kocijowsky) of Oakville, Luba Anne Kowal, and Petrusia Catherine Kowal of Coniston (predeceased 2016). Cherished grandmother of Eugenie Kowal of Oakville, Sonia Stasiuk (Omari Spence) of Brampton and great-grandmother to Riley and Lillian Spence of Brampton. Sadly missed by the Makuch family of Mississauga, the Shewciw family of Sudbury, and Magdalena Bezzubyk and family, Dr. Nadia Plach (godchild) and family of Burlington, and family in Ukraine and Germany. Resting at the Jackson and Barnard Funeral Home, 233 Larch Street, Sudbury. (Friends may call 6-8pm Friday with Panakhyda at 7pm Friday). Funeral Mass in St. Michael’s Ukrainian Catholic Church, 48 William St., Coniston, Saturday, October 24th, 2020 at 9am. Interment in the family plot at St. John’s Cemetery, Garson. No reception after burial service due to COVID-19. In lieu of flowers, donations to Northern Cancer Foundation or St. Michael’s Ukrainian Catholic Church would be appreciated.
