Obituary

Gerald Burton Hill
1926-2020

Gerald Burton Hill of Sudbury passed away on July 20th at Pioneer Manor at the age of 94.
Gerald was born on April 19, 1926 in Lennoxville, Quebec, son of the late Burton Alvin Hill and Gladys Hazel (nee Parker). He grew up on a farm in Stanstead County, Quebec and attended Stanstead College.
He joined the Canadian Army in Sept 1944 and was discharged in August 1946. After various jobs working as a logger on the Queen Charlotte Islands and his father’s grocery store in Lennoxville, he started working for Bell Canada in 1948 in Quebec. Lineman, Cable Splicer, Cable Repairman, Telephone and PBX installer were some of his jobs. He worked six years as an Outside Plant Engineer in Montreal. In 1971 he and his family moved to Sudbury where he worked as a PBX installer due to a shortage of workers. He later became a repairman. Gerald retired in 1985 with 37 years of service.
For many years he was a cub and boy scout leader in St, Bruno, Quebec and Sudbury, and arranged many field and camping trips for the boys. His beloved Bassett Hound, Woody, usually accompanied him on these trips and occasionally managed to snag a good snack off the table.
Gerald was a Charter Member of Greenfield Park Lodge No. 133, Past Master of Sudbury Lodge No.658, Past President of the Sudbury Shrine Club, a 32nd degree Scottish Rite Mason and a member of Algoma No.139 Order of the Eastern Star. He was also a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch No.76.
On Feb 14, 1953 he married Dorothy June Griffin in Sherbrooke Quebec. From this union 5 children were born. While living in Longueuil and St. Bruno, Quebec, Gerald made sure every Sunday was family day which was spent taking car trips to New York State, Vermont, New Hampshire and many places in Quebec. Summer vacations included trips to Baldwin’s Mills on Lake Lyster in Quebec where his parents owned a home; trips out west to Nebraska, Montana, North Dakota and Wyoming to name a few.
He is survived by his loving wife June, Children; Deborah (Peter, deceased), Alan (Wendy), Kenneth (Bill, deceased), Nancy Engstrom (Fred) and Steven (Jo-ann); 9 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren; his sister Gail of Vancouver. Predeceased by his siblings Frederick, Rena, Lyman and Joyce. Will be missed by many nieces and nephews.
The family would like to express a heartfelt thankyou to staff at Pioneer Manor for their amazing care these past 11 months.

I only know June, Alan and Debbie but Robert and I wish to extend our condolences to the entire Hill family. I, too, was employed by Bell. Debbie and I worked in different departments downtown and Gerry was considered an outside employee. I never met him at work but I encountered Debbie many times. I really got to know these four members of the family through Algoma Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star. They were all faithful members and Gerald has been greatly missed for some time. We reside in Brantford now and unfortunately will be unable to attend the service. However, our thoughts and prayers will be with you all. In "Star" always,
Peggy & Robert South

Mr. H was Barney to my Dad’s Fred. Mr. H would always ask me how old I was as his family moved to Portage Avenue shortly after my birth. There was no one as kind and funny ( I can hear his laugh as I write this) There was not a sweet or candy that Mr. H wouldn’t eat. I always wondered why my mom would buy “ribbon candy” at Christmas as my sister and I wouldn’t eat the stuff yet by the end of the holidays it was always gone... I came to find out when I was old enough to understand Mom specifically bought it every year just for Mr. H who LOVED ribbon candy(really any candy!) It won’t be quite the same sitting on my Dads deck not having Mr. H pop around for “just 1 beer”. My prayers will be with Mrs. H and family. “ What the heart has once owned and had it shall never lose”

My sincere condolences to all of Gerry's family and extended family .Gerry was a much liked gentleman who had a quaint "grassroots " charm about him. My sister Joan, who worked at the Sudbury Star ,always said Gerry was the only one who could fix her switchboard ..Gerry had many God given gifts .Sincerely ,Heather Doran Spark.
