Obituary

In loving memory of John Edward McGarry who passed away on June 8th, 2020 at the age of 72. Survived and loved by his long-time friends Jan Lalonde and Fred Norris, his nieces, Vicki, Katie, Sarah, and Amanda Ferguson, and brother-in-law, John Ferguson. Loving son of Dr Frank and Betty McGarry (predeceased), and brother of Patti Ferguson (née McGarry; predeceased). John was a sports enthusiast and loved to play baseball, pool, and golf. He had a brilliant and unparalleled knowledge of trivia and loved music (especially oldies). John was incredibly generous and supported many charities. John was always smiling and always up for a laugh. He loved his friends dearly, and will be missed.

John's passing has left a hole in my life! We were close friends for about 20 years! We first met when joining the former Dooley's pool hall, and played there together until it closed down. We then moved our games to the Parkside senior center downtown, adding a new pool crew of good friends, bringing many hours of laughter & fun games. It became our habit to follow the pool with refreshments at the Townehouse Tavern. John and I, joined by Jan, were usually treated royally by the outstanding staff there. As "regulars", it was common for our choice of beer to be on the bar before we were even seated! John loved the atmosphere there, & the positive interactions between the attentive staff, and also with the customers. Reminded him of "Cheers". They would quickly become our friends. John was known to be generous when the bill arrived! John was friendly, social, helpful and supportive of local talent. He was kind and generous, yet also competitive. (probably hardest on himself) He had a wonderful sense of humour, and was a master of sports and music trivia. Just a few of the traits that made people love him. John liked to scan flyers fot "deals", would sometimes make a great purchase, that might remain in the box! He did much for others, and less for himself. John leaves great memories, too numerous to list. I will miss you, buddy!

I served John and his best friend's, Jan and Fred, at the Townehouse Tavern from 2015-2019. But John was more than just a customer to me, more than a friend even. John was like family.
We played together in the Townehouse Golf tournament 3 years in a row. Our team name was "3 Men and a Baby" except for last year when Jan joined us and we were "Beauties and the Beasts". John and Fred would take me out to the driving range often, and we would go for lunch and beers at St.Louis Grill and/or the Townehouse afterwards.
He and I shared a love of great oldies music, and he would always send me lists of songs to check out that he thought I'd enjoy, most of which I knew already, or came to love.
Wherever you are John, know that I am honored to have known you, and I hope you have an unlimited supply of Labatt Ice.
Cheers!
Your good friend, Liz Murphy

I am so sorry to hear of John's passing. We worked together for almost 20 years at the Data Centre. We hit it off right away and made our work day pass quickly. John was so knowledgeable that we could talk about anything . Unfortunately we lost touch, although we kept up with each other every Christmas. My deepest sympathies to John's nieces and brother-in law along with his closest friends Jan and Fred. Our thoughts and prayers are with you Dianne Falcioni

We are sorry to hear of John’s passing. We met at work in the early 80’s where our paths crossed at many sporting and social events. John was friendly, funny, easy going and genuinely interested in everyone’s story. He was quite thrilled giving a good hip check to a girl in a hockey game and he was quite comfortable driving a 30 year old Toyota with the gas pedal hanging through a rotten floor. His Mother was not as pleased with either event! Jan and Fred have lost their best friend, John’s nieces a special Uncle, the Towne House family a good customer and the world a great human being. RIP John Love Lynn and Art.

I first met John when I started at the Tax Centre in Sudbury. We became friends but seemed to have lost touch over the years. Rest In Peace John you were a really good person.
