Obituary for Salvatore Borello
It is with heavy hearts that we announce that on May 31, 2020, Salvatore Borello (also known lovingly as 'Sam' to his family and 'Tony the Barber' to his customers) passed away peacefully due to complications from Parkinson's Disease. He was 81 years old.
Sam was born on October 15, 1938 in Serra San Bruno, Calabria, Italy. He immigrated to Canada in January 1959 and eventually settled in Sudbury to build a life for himself. He married the love of his life Carmela (nee Malvaso) in October 1966 and they shared 53 years of happiness together. He was a loving father to Michael (wife Brandie), Rosanna (husband Frank) and Roberto (wife Sheila) and beloved Nonno to Alyssa, Isabella, Julianna, Olivia, Emilia and Nicole. He will be missed by many nieces, nephews and godchildren in Ontario and Italy.
In addition to his immediate family, Sam is survived by his brother Giuseppe of Busto Arsizio, Italy. He was preceded in death by his parents Bruno Michele and Maria Rosaria and his five sisters Annunziata, Angelina, Giuseppina, Carmelina, and Bruna all of Italy. He will be reunited with his family in heaven.
'Tony the Barber' was well known and highly respected by his customers and colleagues for the close to 50 years he plied his trade in his shop at the former President Motor Hotel. An overwhelming number of customers sent him personal notes of well-wishing upon his retirement several years ago. These left a lasting impression both on him and our family. He always enjoyed his work and was truly appreciative of the patronage he was bestowed. Perhaps his career was best summed up with following quote from one of his life-long customers - 'I sincerely enjoyed our talks while I was in the chair. You always blessed your customers with a warm welcome and a good dose of common-sense discussion.'
Sam had a handful of passions and most notable was his involvement with the Italia Flyers Soccer Club on which he served on the Executive Committee for over 30 years. He made many lifelong friends through his involvement and was known as the sincere and extremely diligent Board Member who worked behind the scenes on the operations and events of the Club. His friendships with the boys extended to the links and these were among the most enjoyable times spent with his friends. In addition to soccer and golf, Sam enjoyed working his gardens and toiling away on his yard and took great pride in growing his vegetables.
Sam was the epitome of a gentleman and a selfless individual who was truly adored by his family and many friends. He was a man who was careful and kind with his words and of high moral character who left a lasting memory in the lives of those who knew him well. He will never be forgotten and forever loved.
Our family would like to thank the doctors and nursing staff of Heath Sciences North for their care and compassion during the final weeks of his journey in this life.
Due to the current pandemic, there will be no visitation. A private Funeral Service will be held on Wednesday June 3rd with only immediate family in attendance. Entombment in the Park Lawn Cemetery Mausoleum. A celebration of Sam's life will take place at a later date after COVID restrictions have lifted.
