Obituary for Joe Persechino
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our loving husband, father, Nonno, and dear friend, on May 19th, 2020. Giuseppe (Joe) Persechino passed away peacefully in his home surrounded by his loved ones, at the age of 83. He is survived by his wife, Marie, as well as his children: Marianne (Dave), Lisa, Carol (Ken), Marlina, and Michael. He will be missed dearly by his grandchildren: Tamara (Maurice), Blair (Megan), Jacqueline (Jason), Bianca (Kyle), Christine, Jens, Andrew, and Nicholas; and his great grand-daughters, Emma and Riley. Giuseppe (Joe) was the beloved son of Francesco and Marianna and devoted brother to Michele, Antonio, Emilio, all pre-deceased. He will be forever remembered by all his nieces, nephews, aunts, and friends.
Joe was born in the small village of Sant'Apollinare, in the province of Di Frosinone, near Cassino, Italy. His resilience and strength were apparent at a young age, as after surviving the war at 15, he migrated to Canada in 1951 to embark on a new journey. After arriving in Montreal, he eventually moved to Sudbury a few years later to build a life for himself. Shortly after moving, he met and married his wife of 62 years. Joe worked in the mines for over 35 years and made many life-long friendships. He was a dedicated, hard worker who excelled in everything he did; he received several outstanding achievement awards for a safety-free workplace, as well as bonuses along with his co-workers, for their excellent performances.
Joe was one of a kind, with a huge heart and a strong desire to help others. He was generous and the type of person who would give you the shirt off his back. He was a neighbour that everyone could count on, as he was always willing to lend a helping hand. His greatest passion was gardening; for years he maintained his own garden, as well as two others. He spent many long days working in his gardens, refusing to take breaks and was very meticulous, always noticing if anyone picked through any of his gardens. Joe also took great pride in making home-made wine for all to enjoy; we could always find him in either his wine cellar or one of his gardens! In the summertime, he spent countless hours picking wild blueberries, going far into the bushes unfazed by bears or the hot summer sun, so his wife could make his favourite blueberry pies. As a life-time member of the Caruso Club, Joe loved spending his Saturdays playing cards with his friends. After which, he would finish off his day by enjoying a home-cooked meal at his daughter Lisa’s, with her girls (Jacqueline and Bianca). He was fortunate enough to be able to travel and loved being in the ocean. He cherished his visits to Montreal and Edmonton, where he got to spend time with his family. He was honoured to have witnessed two of his grand-children (Tamara and Blair) each get married in Edmonton and proud to have met his eldest great-granddaughter (Emma).
Joe loved his family and friends more than anything. He instilled strong values in them and had a huge impact on all their lives. He will always be in our hearts, be forever loved, and never be forgotten.
