Obituary

It is with sorrow that the family announces the passing of Anne Seaton (nee Mierzwa), aged 86, on March 29th, 2020 in Sudbury at St. Joseph’s Continuing Care Centre. She is survived by her sons, Stewart (Martha), Andrew, Robert (Sarah), daughter in law Jan, her granddaughters, Katie-Anne and Audrey, and her sister Lily (Toronto)

Anne (Anna) was born in Montreal on May 7th, 1933, to Kasper and Maria Mierzwa. Shortly after, the family moved from Montreal to the small mining town of Creighton, Ontario. It was there that her brother Walter (predeceased in infancy) and sister Lily were born. The family then moved to and settled in St. Catharines, Ontario.

Her caring nature led her to pursue a career in nursing. She graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the University of Toronto on May 30th, 1957. She moved to Sudbury in 1960 when she married J. A. Douglas (Doug) Seaton (predeceased 1997). She completed her successful career in the public health field as a Director of Nursing with the Sudbury and District Health Unit. Anne was also a tireless volunteer with the Sudbury Chapter of the IODE and had until recent years contributed to the support of St. Christopher’s Anglican Church during the summer months in McGregor Bay, Ontario where she loved to spend time at the family cottage.

Anne was an avid patron of the arts and loved nothing more than spending a night out at the STC, Opera Guild or the movie theatre. Especially, if she could have the company of her greatest joy, her granddaughters. It was not uncommon to lose contact with her for days at a time during Sudbury’s annual Cinefest.

The family wishes to extend gratitude to Drs Monique and Mo St-Martin and the entire staff at St. Joseph’s Continuing Care Centre. A celebration of life will be arranged for a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. Joseph’s Continuing Care Centre or a charity of your choice. Arrangements entrusted to the Jackson and Barnard Funeral Home, www.lougheed.org.

We lived in Lo Ellen Park in the 60s and the memories of times spent with ‘Uncle’ Doug, ‘Aunt’ Anne and the boys are among the best ever. After moving to St. Catharines, my parents had a standing invitation to stay at the Seatons for the annual Gold Leaf Ball— and anytime we could get up north, theirs was our home away from home. Being the consummate host was just an extension of Anne’s remarkable personality: kind, caring , with an unforgettable sense of humour and fun. She will be greatly missed.

Lisa Thompson (Hank and Betty’s kid).

Dear Stuart, Andrew, Robert and families. I have so many wonderful memories of your Mom and Dad. Godfrey and I shared so many meals, drinks, snow machine rides and winter bonfires with our dear friends, the Seaton's. I so deeply regret that as we got older, we became so involved with our own families and activities that we let our treasured friendships lapse. I will be thinking of you and sending warm hugs. Anne was a truly beautiful, caring woman. She was very special .

I will miss Anne very much. She was such a wonderful person who I came to know through her caring and dedicated work with our shared volunteer work with IODE (Imperial Order Daughters of the Empire). She was a gracious mentor for all of us. My thoughts and prayers are with her family who will feel such a great loss.

Anne was the best “boss” that many of us ever had - in the Family Planning/STI Clinic at the Health Unit. She had the best sense of humour, truly cared for all the staff and patients, she was not afraid to show her emotion and to clearly say what was wrong and what was right, regardless. We al felt that “she had our back” at all times. She loved our babies, spoke highly of her sons and their accomplishments, while yearning for grand kids of her own ! She will be sorely missed by all.
