Obituary for Zygmunt "Zygi" Fila

In loving memory of Zygmunt “Zygi” Peter Fila (78) of Garson who passed away on February 21, 2020 at home with his devoted wife, Gail (of 56 years) by his side. Son of Stella and Peter Fila (both predeceased). Beloved father of April Falcioni (predeceased), Jeff Fila (Melinda Szilva) and Steven Fila (Aimee). Cherished grandfather of Brynn and Marsten Fila. Only brother of Wanda Brown (Gordon), Josie Cotnam (Stewart predeceased) and Theresa Stewart (Dick predeceased). Brother-in-law of Virginia Turpeinen and Alice Turpeinen. Zygi was also brother-in-law to William Turpeinen and John Turpeinen and son-in-law of Charles and Violette Turpeinen, all predeceased. He was a loving uncle to many nephews and nieces.
Zygi was born in Meadowside, Ontario. He loved to tell many stories of his childhood growing up in rural Northern Ontario and Quebec. As a young man, he worked on the Canadian Pacific Railway, first with his father and eventually as a roadmaster. He spent the majority of his career at Falconbridge Nickel Mines Limited and retired as a buyer in 1997. He was a good friend and colleague to many. He had a unique ability to remember anyone he met regardless of how much time had passed. Zygi was a life-long volunteer who contributed to his community through his work with the Red Cross, Meals on Wheels, and most recently, St John’s cemetery in Garson.
He was a man of many talents. Notably, he built his family home and cottage where he enjoyed hosting friends and family. Zygi loved the outdoors and enjoyed fishing and cross-country skiing. He was also a railroad aficionado, and accomplished bowler. However, his first and foremost love was his family. In particular, his grandchildren who brought him great joy.
Zygi battled cancer with the same determination and courage that he demonstrated throughout his life. He was grateful for the volunteer drivers at the Canadian Cancer Society and the care and compassion he received at the Northeast Cancer Centre and from outstanding neighbour and friend, Debbie.
Zygi will be sadly missed by all who touched his life, but mostly by his loving family.
Cremation has taken place. Friends and family are invited to a celebration of life at the Jackson & Barnard Funeral Home, 233 Larch Street, Sudbury on Saturday February 29th, 2020 at 11:30am. Friends may gather after 11:15am
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations to the Northeast Cancer Centre would be appreciated.
