Obituary for Robert John Bateman

The family of Robert John (Bob) Bateman announces his passing in his 83rd year. He is survived by his children: Stephanie (Pi Frazier predeceased), Stephen (predeceased), Bart Bateman and Scott Bateman and his step- children Alex Crossgrove, ( Cathy), Keith Crossgrove, (Kerri Griffeth) and Bonnie Crossgrove and his many, many grandchildren. Predeceased are his first wife (Heraldine (Sandy) Wilkinson and his second wife of forty years Patricia Edwards Crossgrove Bateman. He is also survived by his sister Ruth Dicerni.
Bob was born in Belleville, Ontario to Frank William Bateman and Hazel Rikley Bateman. He came to Sudbury to work for the City as an assistant in the recreation department, where he was in charge of playgrounds and where he guided many a young mind. In the 60s, he was appointed director of Urban Renewal, which position he held until the completion of the project. He was then hired by the developer of the urban renewal project, Oshawa Wholesale and he spent ten years developing properties for them in Sudbury and Montreal. For the past twenty years he was an independent and much respected deal maker. Recently, he was appointed a lay bencher for the Law Society of Ontario.
He was a past president of the Sudbury and District Chamber of Commerce and a long time executive member of the Ontario Conservative Party, locally and provincially.
There will be no visitation or funeral. A Celebration of Life will be announced shortly. The family would appreciate memorial donations to the Northern Cancer Research Foundation, (www.ncfsudbury.com ).
