Janina Mrozewski

Janina “Babcia” Mrozewski (nee Karolewska) was born on June 12, 1930 in Warsaw Poland. After the Soviet invasion of Poland in 1939, the Soviets in 1940 began a program of deportation of Poles from Eastern Poland to Kazakhstan and Siberia. Janina, with her mother, sister and brother were deported to Kazakhstan. Janina was orphaned at 9 years old as her mother died in a labour camp in 1940, and her father, Major Witold Karolewski V.M. was killed, along with 20,000 Polish Officers, clergy and intelligentsia by the Soviets in Katyn forest in 1940.
She came to Montreal in 1950, where she met Andrzej and they married in 1954. Together they lived in Montreal, Ottawa, Rouyn-Noranda and Sherbrooke before settling in Sudbury in 1972. They celebrated their 65 wedding anniversary this past August. Babcia as she was known to all, was an avid gardener, loved to cook and play bridge. She also cross country skied, kayaked, did pottery, and loved to sew clothes for her kids, grandchildren and herself.
In later life she was afflicted with Alzheimer’s, but she never wavered in her zest for life and love of family.
Janina is survived by her husband Andrzej, her children Andre (Bernadette), Monika (Eric Pahapill), Jasiu (Jennifer) and grandchildren Matjash, Stefan, Tomasz, Andre-Michel, Aleksa, Stefan, Lucas, Kristen.
