It is with great sadness that the family announces the passing of Caterina Castellan (Leon) on October 20th, 2019, surrounded by family throughout her journey. Beloved wife of 70 years of Bruno, predeceased 2016. Loving mother of Denise (Enzo Massimiliano) and doting grandmother of Christine and Cynthia (Jason Matte). Predeceased by her parents Angelo and Angela Leon. Caterina will be missed by her brothers Giuseppe Leon (Mary) of Brampton, Giovanni Leon (Dorothy) of Sudbury, and her sister Maria (Pietro Chivilo, predeceased) of Italy. She leaves behind several nieces and nephews in Italy, France, and Canada.
Born in Valvasone, Italy, Caterina was raised and educated in France. She immigrated to Canada in 1954, with her husband and her daughter. Caterina’s pride and joy were her daughter and granddaughters, who were the focus of her life. She instilled in them her passion for learning, the value of education, and her love of languages. We will always remember her words, “Soyez sages”.
Caterina was a hardworking woman who was meticulous in all her undertakings, be it cooking, baking, sewing, knitting, or crocheting. She enjoyed gardening, playing bocce, and dancing with her beloved Bruno at the Caruso Club. A woman of faith, she found solace in Saint Anthony and faithfully attended St. Anthony’s Church as long as her health allowed.
The family would like to offer its sincere appreciation to the staff at Extendicare York, for their hard work, compassion, and support throughout the 10 years Caterina spent with them.
Donations in her memory can be made to St. Anthony’s Church Building Fund or to any charity of your choice.
