Eileen Loretto O'Neill (née Mulligan) 1921-2019
It is with heavy hearts that the family announces the passing of Eileen O'Neill on Monday, February 18, 2019, in Sudbury, Ontario. Eileen was born in Sudbury on May 11, 1921, the fourth daughter of Judge T. Murray Mulligan and Mary Delphine (May) Flanagan (both predeceased). Their family was made up of five girls and two boys, of which Eileen was the middle child. She is survived by her youngest sister, Sheila Gilbride (Patrick) of Thunder Bay and was predeceased by three sisters and two brothers: Helen McKinnon (D.L.), Bessie Singbush (Alex), Mary Kierans (Tom), Murray Mulligan (Josephine) and D'Arcy Mulligan (Betty).
Eileen was the mother of four children, Angela Polowin (Jeff) of Toronto, Stephen (Shirley) of Sudbury, Raymond of Burlington, Nova Scotia, and D'Arcy (Debra, deceased) of Willisville, Ontario.
"Nana" was a loving grandmother to seven grandchildren: Jason Flowerday (Alison), Toronto, Michelle Flowerday (Casey Walsh), Toronto, Justin Flowerday (Nikki), Toronto, Shannon Goffin (Cameron), Sudbury, Brian O'Neill (Rebekkah), Little Current, Erin Ethelston (Dave), Sudbury, and Caitlin O'Neill, Courtenay, British Columbia. Eileen was an amazing "GG" to 15 great-grandchildren: Victoria, Olivia, Thomas, Hannah, Samuel, Julia, Owen, Madeline, Stella, Brendan, Kieran, Abigail, Liam, Evie, and Maible. She will be fondly remembered by Angel Odjig of Wikwemikong, who, during her high school years, lived with Eileen.
Eileen was predeceased by her stepmother, Matilda (née Jackman) Mulligan, John Barry O'Neill, the father of her four children, and many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews, and cousins.
Eileen grew up in Sudbury. She, and generations to follow, spent summers on Lake Ramsey, where her grandfather, Judge James Arthur Mulligan, purchased a large parcel of land in the late 1800s. Several "camps" (the term for "cottages" north of Parry Sound) were built on Mulligan Bay by various members of the family. Eileen attended elementary and high school in Sudbury, followed by a year at St. Joseph's College in Toronto, where she obtained a business diploma. She then returned to Sudbury, where, during the war years, she worked at the offices of Cochrane Dunlop Hardware. Following her marriage in 1945, she resided in Almonte, Keno Hill, Yukon, Thunder Bay, and Toronto, and returned to Sudbury in 1957 to raise her four children. She worked at a number of mining supply businesses, retiring at age 65 from Clarke Phillips Supply Co. in Copper Cliff.
Upon retirement, Eileen returned to her beloved Lake Ramsey, where she lived for 15 years with Stephen and family in her Granny Suite. During those years, she enjoyed travelling with friends and family members to many places throughout the world, including Ireland, Italy, and Argentina. A memorable trip included a 2013 return visit to Yukon, where she travelled to Keno and the log cabin that was her home in the early years of her marriage.
Eileen spent many years as a volunteer at the Soup Kitchen on Elgin Street and St. Joseph's Hospital on Paris Street. She was a lifelong parishioner of Christ the King Church and a life member of the parish C.W.L.
She spent the last 19 years of her life living independently at the Birch Glen Apartments in Sudbury, making numerous visits to Cranberry and Charlton Lakes in the La Cloche Mountains, where her large, extended family will continue to gather and cherish her memory.
