Obituary for Elizabeth Gorky (Nikolachvili)

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Elizabeth Gorky (Feb. 9, 1925-Feb. 2, 2019) at Finlandia Village in Sudbury Ontario. Elizabeth was born in Tsaritsyn (U.S.S.R.) which became Stalingrad a few months after her birth to loving parents Daria and Porfiry (predeceased). She had one sister, Alexandra Nitsenko (predeceased). She overcame the tragedy of forced labor in Germany during the war to triumph in her beloved adopted country of Canada.
Predeceased by her husband Dimitry whom she married in Austria.
Exactly 70 years ago she arrived in Canada and loved everything about Canada. A country where no one awaited her and no benefits were given or expected outside the benefit of working hard and creating a new life in freedom. This she did very well. Survived by her beloved children Nina (Efim), Ellin, Olga (Robert), adored and adoring grandchildren Liuba (Francisco) and Daniel (Helen) and her great-granddaughter, the inimitable Paloma. A fourth daughter, Mary, died in infancy. Survived by many nieces and nephews in Russia, Ukraine, and Georgia.
She was bigger than life and was loved by many. She quietly helped so many people, immigrants, people seeking to adopt children from Russia.
Her good deeds were many. She was a founding member of the Sudbury Multicultural Society. She obtained a graduate degree and went on to become a professor and chairman of the Modern Languages Department at Laurentian University.
But most of all, she lived and taught love. Her granddaughter described her as a real one-of-a-kind light and her lessons in life will be shared with her daughter.
She loved to laugh, sing, and dance, especially her Georgian "Suliko"
and Racha-style dance.
Her most memorable words to us were: "I can not teach you how to pray.
I don't know the right way. Just do good."
