It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Michael John Kurdell. Mike, as he was known to his family and friends, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on Tuesday, December 25, 2018. Born and raised in Sudbury, September 17, 1940, Mike was the devoted son of George and Mary Kurdel (both predeceased), brother to Rudy Kurdel (predeceased, wife Jean) and Madga Lahay (husband Frank, both predeceased).
Mike will be profoundly missed and forever loved by his adoring wife Sharon. Mike and Sharon, married November 25, 1967 shared a special love for 51 wonderful years. Through their love, Mike and Sharon raised their 3 children, Lisa (Fred), Jennifer (friend Chris) and David (Ana). He found great joy in spending time with his 3 beautiful granddaughters, Olivia, Cecilia and Hayley. Mike will also be sadly missed by many nieces, nephews and cousins both here in Canada as well as “the old country” of Slovakia.
Mike spent 34 years imparting knowledge and skills to numerous kids in the Sudbury area. A teacher with the Sudbury Separate School Board, Mike enjoyed coaching various sports teams while inspiring and building confidence in his students. In his retirement, Mike proudly served as a volunteer at the Northern Cancer Centre for 20 years. He was a great inspiration to many people, always showing great care and compassion. Mike enjoyed making people laugh and was always ready with a joke to tell. An exceptional athlete himself, Mike excelled at basketball in his early days, then transitioned to golf and found his true passion in the world of curling. Mike twice proudly represented Northern Ontario at the Canadian Masters Championships, winning several awards including being named to the All-Star team. When not curling competitively, Mike relished in playing in the men’s, teachers and pensioners leagues surrounded by his many curling buddies.
