Obituary

Passed away peacefully at his home on Sunday, December 16th, 2018. He was married to the love of his life, Darlene “Stevie” Newell (Stephens) for 51 years. Loving father to Lara (Sean), Erin (Jamie), Jessica (Paul). Cherished Poppy to Haley (Stephen), Evan, Marley, Mia and Dylan. Dedicated son of Jack and Gladys Newell (both predeceased). Special son-in-law to Ed and Goldie Stephens (both predeceased). Devoted brother to Barry (predeceased), (Bev – predeceased), Dan (Shirley), Bruce (Linda), John (Estelle – predeceased), Jane (predeceased), (Art Leroux), Kathy (John Mahon), Walter (predeceased) (Carol), Michael (Carol), Peter and Joseph (both predeceased). Honourary Brother to Bob Gairns (predeceased) (Jeannie), and Wayne Beasley (Sharon). Dave was loved by so many nieces, nephews, and special people including Geoff Morris (Suzy). He was a friend and mentor to countless others.
Dave was born and raised in Copper Cliff, a town that he always held near and dear to his heart. Dave had a successful on-ice career with the NHL that spanned 23 years, from 1967 to 1990. When he stepped off the ice, he took a position in the NHL’s Officiating Department, eventually moving up to the role of Assistant Director of Officiating. During the off-season, Dave shared many happy memories and his love of the outdoors with family and friends at Birch Lake, and on the French River.
Dave was a selfless leader, known for his courage and generosity. He was a champion of the underdog, even when it wasn’t in his own best interest. Dave was a hard-working, loving, gentle and respected man who would lend a hand to anyone in need. He will be missed by so many. He will always be our hall of famer. Love Always, 6.

I just read about Dave's passing. My parents met ( Dave's brother ) Danny & Shirley on their honeymoon in 1961. I met Dave when on a family travel to Sudbury , summer of 85. Great experience. Dave was gracious . Pucks & soulful hockey tales and insights. When Dave was in town to ref a Caps game . He was gracious with his time. He introduced me to Ron Asseltine & Jerry Pateman. Great times. Love to the Newell's and Dave's eternal spirit

It is with sadness that we heard about Dave’ passing. It is times like this that memories come back to happier times when we were growing up and families like the Newell’s were part of our everyday living. Our condolences to all of the family and it’s comforting to know that he left so much to so many people and we are happy to have known him!
