Obituary for Stasia "Stella" Zelenczuk (Lewchuk)

Stasia "Stella" Zelenczuk (Lewchuk)
In Loving Memory of Stasia Zelenczuk who passed away peacefully on September 15, 2016 at Pioneer Manor. Beloved wife of Mike Zelenczuk predeceased September 27, 1984. Loving mother of William (Daria) of Sudbury, Nick (Barbara) of Toronto and Mary Radzikoski (Dave) of Port Colborne. Cherished Babtsia of Bill Zelenczuk (Jennifer) of Sudbury, Yolana Mahony (Chris) of Toronto, Andrea LaPlante (Tyler) of St. Catharines, Mike Radzikoski (Brittney) of Port Colborne, Michael Zelenczuk and Nicholas Zelenczuk of Toronto. Proud great-grandmother of Billy, Emma, Griffon, Axel and Sage. Stasia, also known as Stella, was born Stanislawa Lewchuk on April 16th 1923 in a small town of Kryvachyntsi in Ukraine. Being the youngest of 6 girls in her family, she was left an orphan at the age of 6 when her parents Bartholomew and Clarka Lewchuk passed away. She was raised by an older sister who was married to a shoemaker. She always said the best fitting shoes she ever had were made by her brother-in-law. Stasia managed to survive the Holodomor of 1932-33 and witnessed the atrocities of the Stalin regime. She could never bring herself to speak of this horror nor could she watch their documentaries. In the early days of WWII, Stasia was taken to a German labour camp where she met her future husband Mike. In 1945, after the war, they were married along with twenty five other couples on the same day, with the same wedding ring. This became one of her life-long good memories. It was while they were in Haltern Germany in 1947 that their first son Vasyl (William) was born. Mike and Stasia moved from Germany to Belgium where Mike tried to make a living in the coal mines of Belgium. After saving enough money for passage to Canada, they left Belgium and settled in Sudbury in 1951. Stasia and Mike became quite involved in the Ukrainian community in Sudbury. Mike was an excellent carpenter and in addition to working at INCO, had volunteered in the building of the Ukrainian National Federation hall on Frood Rd. While in Sudbury, their second son Mykola (Nick) was born in 1955 and a year later, their only daughter Marusia (Mary) was born. Stasia and Mike left Sudbury In 1968 to own and operate SeaGull Lodge, a tourist camp in Sturgeon Falls until 1982 during which time they worked very hard at upgrading their business. They also built a summer home along the Sturgeon River and upon retiring in 1982, spent their winters in Florida and summers by the water in Sturgeon Falls. Unexpectedly, Mike passed away in the fall of 1984, leaving Stasia on her own. With the help of her family, Stasia continued to live their retirement dream until 1988, when she decided to occupy an apartment at the newly built Ukrainian Seniors Centre in Sudbury. This move re-energized her; she was now living with Ukrainians and felt very much at home there. Beyond her commitments to the Ukrainian community was her priority to her family. She showed by example the importance of family unity, love and respect of each other for all members of her family. She was a very good person, a caring and devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was a supporter of the Ukrainian Seniors Centre and St. Mary’s Ukrainian Catholic Church with many years of participation in their pyrohy and holubtsi workshops. In the spring of 2016 at the age of 93, she became ill and had to leave the Ukrainian Seniors Centre for residence at the Pioneer Manor where she received the care she needed. Stasia was a person that would never say anything bad about anyone so she was liked by everyone no matter where she went. The respect and friendship she received from all and the love of her family made her life feel fulfilled.

Special thanks to the staff at Pioneer Manor, Cedar wing for their compassionate and professional care. They made Stasia feel at home during her short stay at Pioneer Manor.
Vichnaya Pamiat Stasia.
Spochyvaj z Bohom.
