Life Story for Madeleine "Mimi" Genier

Madeleine "Mimi" Genier
In Loving Memory
of
Madeleine “Mimi” Genier
July 10th, 1941 - October 21st, 2014
Today our family lost its most glorious rose; Mimi continued on her journey today at the Maison Vale Hospice, (the spas as she called it). Mimi told us recently that you have 2 choices in life, Be Happy or Miserable….she chose Happy!

As we remember the many happy times, we have to smile for a woman who loved life, her family, her friends and her gardens. Christmas was Mimi’s holiday; she started shopping on December 27th for the next year. Yard sales, TV advertised products and the Jarrett Centre were here shopping grounds. You just never knew what you would receive from Mimi and her crowning glory was the year she proudly presented Richard and Niles with long handled collection plates from our childhood church. “You are to use these for people that visit your camp and eat all your food and drink all your booze, take up a collection!” She claimed it was payback for buying her a toilet seat and she thought it was a family portrait. Always one to have fun, she insisted that her grandkids play hooky occasionally (everyone needs a Saturday on a Wednesday once in a while). She was adventurous, she rolled in the snow after a hot tub (once was enough), went to Cuba in her late 60’s and even the grandkids had trouble keeping up! Mimi loved food…. spinach dip, bacon wrapped chestnuts, Miss Vickie’s salt and vinegar chips, devilled eggs, poutine and Pepsi were her staple items, although she ensured that she had a fruit bowl, because you have to eat healthy, don’t you know! Her blueberry upside down cake, strawberry jam, butter tarts and lasagna were legendary. Never one to hold back on what she thought or felt, when she received the Mayor’s Award for Volunteerism she whispered to Mayor Courtemanche; is this almost over, I want to take off my pantyhose and have something to eat! She also told Kris Kristofferson; thank goodness I almost died, and you took pity on me, or I would have never met you. She leaves memories of dressing like a fairy for a St. Catherine’s pull taffy party, wearing zany costumes at the annual Mother-Daughter escape, trying to drive boat, sticking up for her grandkids, anywhere and with anyone, planting more flowers in a small space than humanly possible and a zest for life that had you thinking; I am so glad that she took me along for the ride.

As she continues her ride on her next journey, she is fondly remembered as: One of a kind Mom: Richard Poitras (Elaine) and Angele Poitras/ Bass (Niles). Awesome Mimi: Clinton and Dylanne Taylor, Matthew and Shane Poitras. Marvelous Step Mimi and Great Mimi: Sherry Lynne (Danny), Christina, Cassandra (Brandon), Noah, Zoey, Emma and Caleb Bass. Mimi by proxy: Derek, Mireille, Neve and Dominque Poitras. Adventurous daughter: Aline and Isadore Genier (both predeceased), spirited sister: Jeanette Whissell (Bob), Gerry Genier (Cecile) and Patsy Moise (Claude). Crazy Tante Mads: to many nieces and nephews. Fun-loving friend: Horticultural Society, Red Cross, Meals on Wheels, her neighbours and others. Tic Tac Queen and greatest babysitter to Buddie

In celebration of Mimi’s life please join us
at the Lougheed Funeral Home,
252 Regent Street at Hazel Street
on Friday, October 24th, 2014 from 1 to 4 p.m.

In lieu of flowers please donate to Meals on Wheels (Sudbury), Red Cross (Sudbury Branch), Maison Vale Hospice.

To the many people that have shared laughs and kindness with Mimi and her family during her final journey, please know each and every one of you has a special place in her heart and ours.

Special thanks to Mimi’s big sister Jeanette, every sister deserves a sister like you.

“Remember…. You can be happy or miserable…. the choice is yours!”
